Closing the gaps in health equity for African communities in Washington

Testing  |  Vaccines  |  Education  |  Community

Our amazing partners work tirelessly to ensure their communities have access to vital healthcare services and information related to COVID-19 across Washington.

Thanks to DOH funding through the Community Driven Outreach Program, eleven grantees have reached tens of thousands of people, providing a wide range of services including COVID-19 testing and vaccination, education, community health fairs, and other wrap-around services.

A heartfelt story...

One heartfelt story that embodies the impact of our project is of a family who attended our Easter Event.

A mother, let’s call her Sarah, arrived with her two young children, visibly tired and worried due to the challenges they had been facing during the pandemic. Sarah shared with us that she had lost her job, and her family was struggling to make ends meet while dealing with health concerns.

At the event, Sarah and her children were welcomed with open arms, receiving not only food and resources but also access to health services like COVID testing and vaccines. The kids participated in the fun activities like face painting and balloon art, their smiles lighting up the event. Sarah was able to receive support and information on job resources and healthcare assistance.

As the day went on, Sarah’s demeanor visibly changed from worry to relief and gratitude. She expressed how much the event meant to her family and how it lifted their spirits during a difficult time. The sense of community and care she felt from the event made her realize that she was not alone in facing these challenges.
